Syria has implemented a new system to aid the influx of Syrians and Lebanese seeking refuge in the country following Israel's bombardment of Lebanon. The Rif Dimashq governorate has set up an 'operations room' to support those arriving from Lebanon, as reported by Syria's state-run SANA news agency.
The governorate, located in the southwest of Syria bordering Lebanon to the west and Jordan to the south, aims to provide necessary assistance to the thousands of displaced individuals and establish shelter centers for their accommodation. Since Tuesday, over 6,697 Lebanese and 17,850 Syrians have crossed into Syria through the Jdeidet Yabous crossing on the Syrian-Lebanese border, according to Jassem Al-Mahmoud, the deputy governor of Rif Dimashq.
Many of the displaced individuals arriving in Syria do not have concrete plans for their future, as highlighted by UNHCR Middle East spokesperson Rula Amin. The situation underscores the urgent need for humanitarian support and assistance to address the needs of those fleeing the conflict in Lebanon.
