Syracuse Decides on Future of Head Football Coach Dino Babers, per Report

Syracuse fired football coach Dino Babers on Sunday after eight years with the program, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported.

The team is planning to name tight ends coach Nunzio Campanile the interim coach for the remainder of the season. He previously acted as interim coach at Rutgers in 2019.

The Orange fell to 5–6 on Saturday following their 31–22 loss to Georgia Tech. The team started out the season strong by going 4–0. However, Syracuse lost the next five games, putting them below .500 on the season.

With just one game left in the regular season, next week’s contest vs. Wake Forest, the best Syracuse can finish is with a .500 record. This means Babers will finish his tenure there with just two winning records (10–3 in 2018, 7–6 in ‘22).

The 62–year–old coach has been on coaching staffs since he was a graduate student in 1984 at Hawaii. He first became a head coach at Eastern Illinois during the 2012–13 seasons, then went to Bowling Green for the following two seasons. He’s been at Syracuse since 2016.

Babers will finish his Syracuse tenure with a 41–55 overall record.
