Sympathy for Boris in Nottingham but many wonder how long he will last

After two major resignations in Boris Johnson’s government, people in Nottingham city centre think the PM won’t quit but that he is in danger of being “pushed out.” There was also some sympathy for him. On July 5th 2022, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Savid Javid, the Health Secretary, resigned. Both resignations happened within half an hour.

People in Nottingham said they were feeling slightly sorry for the Prime Minister but feel that his conduct and the partygate scandal are big issues. Nursery nurse Shannon James, 29 described the major resignations last night as “not surprising.”

The Carlton resident said: “I wouldn’t want to be serving in this government or backing the Prime Minister either. You look at all of what he’s done and you just think ‘how is he still here?’”

Shannon thought that the Prime Minister would be “booted out” after the images of Partygate were revealed. Shannon continued and said: “Yes he has a hard job but he’s made it so much harder for himself with all the lies. I genuinely think that he just laughs at us all, he needs to go.”

Despite the two resignations last night, Boris Johnson has insisted that he will “keep going” as Prime Minister. Gillian Allsopp, 69 feels it’s time for the Prime Minister to resign.

The Arnold resident said: “Last night was the breaking point, I don’t think he’ll [Boris Johnson] will voluntarily go, he’ll end up being pushed out. People have had enough, I did feel sorry for him during the pandemic though.”

Gillian has no idea who she would want to take over from Boris Johnson. She added: “I certainly don’t want Keir Starmer [to take over.]

After the resignation last night, another no confidence vote could be on the cards. Jay Chester, 23 told Nottinghamshire Live: “It’s not great.

“I don’t think he’ll [Boris Johnson] resign, we’ve seen resignations through this terms but he’s perhaps too self assured to back down.” The lecturer living in West Bridgford added: “People in his party are still backing him, there’s a strong chance he’ll go but Labour need to up their marketing.”

Speaking from Market Square, one person who decided to remain anonymous told Nottinghamshire Live: “This has happened so many times in the past [resignations] there’s been Thatcher, May, there’s been knives out for Boris for a long time. I feel sorry for him in a way.

“I feel like he shouldn’t have listened to his advisors, they’ve been advising them wrong.” This person feels that Boris Johnson has done a good job with getting the country out of Brexit and the pandemic. They continued and said: “I don’t dislike him, what Prime Minister except from during the war has gone through what he has gone through?”

Labour MP for Nottingham East Nadia Whittome has said: "I’m glad that Conservative ministers are finally resigning - as they should have long ago. The real question is why they spent so much time propping up a lying Prime Minister who lacks all morals.

“It’s clear that Boris Johnson is no longer supported by a majority of the public or a majority of MPs. We’re witnessing the dying days of this government - the country should be given the opportunity to elect a new one.”
