While Sydney’s train network has been in the complete shitter over the holidays — speaking as someone who frequents the T1 Western Line — Transport NSW has confirmed that Sydney trains will be running continuously over 46 hours during New Year’s Eve.
Just enough transport to give the whole roster a cheeky NYE kiss goodbye!!!
ICYMI, Sydneysiders who rely on the train work have been in the trenches in the last couple of months as rail unions and the New South Wales government clash over pay and working conditions. Despite many negotiations, the unions have not been satisfied with the hand they’ve been dealt with, leading to strikes and work bans.
While tensions between the unions and the government reached boiling point ahead of New Year’s Eve — with the government calling on the Fair Work Commission over safety fears and its impact on the economy if a work ban was implemented on New Year’s Eve — the unions have promised to halt any major breaks during the major holiday.
To make things a bit better for those relying on Sydney trains to get around town this New Year’s Eve, it has been confirmed that Sydney Trains will provide 1,000 additional rail services from December 31 to 5am New Year’s Day.
“Approximately 3,600 Sydney Trains staff will work across the network on New Year’s Eve, to help the million-plus crowd expected to flood into the city’s vantage points have a safe and reliable public transport trip,” Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland said, per ABC News.
On top of that extra amount of service, Transport NSW also said an additional 1,500 bus services will be arranged as well as the Sydney Metro being in full swing between Tallawong and Sydenham.
Although more public transport is being arranged for NYE festivities, punters are still being urged to plan ahead to avoid lengthy wait times.
“It’s an amazing thing to be able to welcome everybody in the way that we expected,” Crity of Sydney executive producer Stephen Gilby told ABC.
“For those heading into town, please plan your night and arrive early. Allow plenty of time to get to your destination.”
While it seems like Sydneysiders can finally catch a break regarding the train networks, tensions between the unions and the government are still simmering underneath the surface.
Unfortunately, this ain’t one of those things we can leave in 2024, like a terrible situationship or bad habit.
But for now, at least we can get tizzed up for the new year and expect a train to rock up!
