Sydney-based commuters trying to get to work this morning have found themselves in a bit of a pickle thanks to a whole heap of delays and cancelled trains due to more industrial action by the rail unions.
After a break over the silly season, The Rail, Train, and Bus Union has resumed industrial action in its pursuit of receiving a 32 per cent pay rise across four years for its members, along with a 35-hour work week and an extra one per cent in superannuation.
From Wednesday, the union has instated 10 bans for members across the train network. These bans include slowing trains by 23km, banning members from working with contractors and preventing work from reinstating cancelled services.
As a result, delays and cancellations have already hit commuters hard. Currently, punters on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line are facing delays of more than 40 minutes after multiple services were cancelled. The T1 Western Line, T3 Liverpool and the T2 Inner West and Leppington lines are also facing hefty delays.
To combat the cancellations and delays, buses will support train services where possible.
However, it’s not looking good if you’d like to get anywhere on time. Sadly, it’s looking like the situation will only get worse throughout the week as work bans at the Rail Operations Centre impact the network so people have been urged to delay non-essential travel.
The industrial action this week comes off the back of the NSW Government offering the rail workers a rise of 13 per cent over four years, 19 per cent lower than what the union is asking for.
So, in the meantime, it might be the sign you’re looking for if you’d like to work from home.
