Sydney Thunder sack WBBL coach Griffin

The Sydney Thunder's WBBL boss Trevor Griffin has become the second elite coach sacked by Cricket NSW in the space of six weeks.

The decision to fire Griffin follows a lacklustre WBBL campaign in which the Thunder won only one of 14 matches and finished last on the ladder.

The disappointing season came despite the return of superstar Rachael Haynes and followed on from a second-last finish in the previous tournament.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, the Thunder said the time was right for a change.

The Thunder's second WBBL coach, Griffin assumed the role in 2019 and took the side to the title the following year.

He oversaw the development of young talents including Phoebe Litchfield and Hannah Darlington, who both made their Twenty20 International debut during his tenure.

"It's been an amazing opportunity and one I'm incredibly proud of: a huge honour, and I've built memories and friendships for life," Griffin said of his time at the Thunder.

"I'm excited to see what the future holds for everyone."

The Thunder are yet to announce Griffin's replacement.

Griffin's dismissal follows that of Phil Jaques, who was removed as NSW's Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup coach after the Blues sat bottom of both ladders with the Big Bash break approaching.

Sydney Sixers men's coach Greg Shipperd is replacing Jaques on an interim basis for the remainder of the summer.
