Sydney Sweeney's Strategic Career Moves Pay Off Despite Film Flop

Sony Japan Mobility Show 2023, in Tokyo

Sydney Sweeney recently shared insights in an interview with GQ UK regarding her role in Sony's 'Madame Web,' describing it as a 'strategic business decision' that ultimately paved the way for future successes. Despite 'Madame Web' being a box office disappointment, Sweeney viewed it as a stepping stone that led to significant opportunities at Sony Pictures.

She credited the film for establishing a relationship with Sony, which later resulted in her starring in the successful romantic comedy 'Anyone but You.' Sweeney emphasized the importance of strategic decision-making in her career trajectory, highlighting how 'Madame Web' opened doors for her subsequent projects.

While 'Madame Web' faced criticism and underperformed at the box office, Sweeney's collaboration with Sony flourished with the release of 'Anyone but You,' which garnered $214 million worldwide. The actress acknowledged the different dynamics involved in working on a major superhero film like 'Madame Web,' where she had limited control over the outcome.

Despite the challenges, Sweeney expressed interest in reprising her role if the opportunity aligns with the right creative team and storyline. She emphasized her desire to be more involved in the production process of future projects, aiming to have a greater influence and creative input.

Following the mixed reception of 'Madame Web,' Sweeney humorously addressed the film's criticism on platforms like 'Saturday Night Live' and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live.' Her co-star, Dakota Johnson, also reflected on the experience, acknowledging the unexpected nature of the filmmaking process and the industry's unpredictable outcomes.

'Madame Web' continues its theatrical run, while Sweeney's upcoming film, 'Immaculate,' is set to premiere on March 22 under Neon. The actress remains focused on pursuing projects that allow for a more collaborative and hands-on approach, aiming to leverage her industry experience for future endeavors.
