A Verizon Wireless receipt from July 2 surfaced online, indicating changes made to the 'Euphoria' star's account. The receipt, accompanied by an iPhone and its box, suggested that Sweeney may have fallen victim to SIM swapping, a technique where hackers seize a target's phone number to redirect communications to a device under their control.
While Page Six reached out to Sweeney's representatives for comment, a Verizon spokesperson refrained from discussing specific customer cases but emphasized the company's commitment to customer privacy and account security. The spokesperson assured that Verizon promptly investigates and addresses reported issues to prevent their recurrence.
The receipt date coincided with the hacking incident on Sweeney's X account, where hackers posted tweets related to cryptocurrency scams. The tweets promoted a newly created meme coin called Pump.fun, purportedly associated with Sweeney. The hackers falsely claimed that Sweeney would be showcasing the coin's capabilities in an upcoming live session on Spaces.
Sweeney swiftly regained control of her account and removed all fraudulent content. Her X page now displays her last legitimate post from May, promoting her upcoming film where she portrays boxer Christy Martin. This incident adds Sweeney to the growing list of celebrities whose social media accounts have been compromised by cybercriminals.
Notable personalities like rappers 50 Cent, Doja Cat, and Rich the Kid, along with former wrestler Hulk Hogan, have also experienced similar hacking incidents recently. The prevalence of such cyberattacks underscores the importance of robust security measures to safeguard personal and professional online accounts from unauthorized access and misuse.
