A Sydney nurse has been stood down and charged after an antisemitic video was posted to social media in which she and a male colleague allegedly bragged about killing Israeli patients, refusing them treatment, and saying they would go to hell.
On Tuesday evening, 26-year-old Sarah Abu Lebdeh was arrested and charged with three Commonwealth offences: threaten violence to a group, using carriage service to threaten to kill and using carriage service to menace/harass/offend.
The charges come after an investigation from Strike Force Pearl — an investigations unit specifically looking into antisemitic hate crimes — which began on February 12. According to NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb, the charges were a big development in an exhaustive investigation.
“Strike Force Pearl detectives must be commended for acting swiftly under enormous pressure and public expectation,” Webb said.
“These charges have been laid following a lot of hard work and legal advice, received yesterday from the Commonwealth DPP. Detectives have overcome obstacles and jurisdictional challenges to get where we are today.”
Webb also stated that this is the 14th arrest under Strike Force Pearl, which currently has a total of 76 charges laid.
“[It] demonstrates the commitment of strike force detectives investigating these offences,” she concluded.
Abu Lebdeh and her Bankstown Hospital colleague Ahmad ‘Rashad’ Nadir were streaming on the live video chat platform Chatruletka when they were recorded claiming to allegedly refuse treatment to Israeli patients, killing them and claiming they would go to hell.
The video was shared by Israeli social media personality Maz Veifer on February 12, sparking outrage across the country.
The pair were stood down from their roles at the hospital pending an investigation.
Nadir has not been charged. Abu Lebdeh has been granted conditional bail and is due to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday March 19, 2025.
