Sydney go top after belting 36ers in NBL

Xavier Cooks threw down another contender for dunk of the year as Sydney catapulted back to the top of the NBL ladder, thumping Adelaide 97-78 at Qudos Bank Arena.

The Kings notched the first seven points of the match and were never headed let alone threatened on Sunday, winning each quarter, advancing to a 9-3 record and overtaking New Zealand into first place.

Former NBA playmaker Derrick Walton Jr (16 points, 11 assists) was at his creative best, allowing big Tim Soares (18 points) to clean up.

Dejan Vasiljevic (15 points, 3-of-6 three-pointers), who missed 16 straight treys in Sydney's previous two games, rediscovered his perimeter stroke.

"Defensively, we executed the way we wanted to," Kings coach Chase Buford said.

"Derrick did a great job offensively of getting us in the flow, providing opportunities for others and himself.

"He had a great game as a floor general.

"It was a good performance from the guys."

Daniel Johnson (21 points) led the charge for the Sixers, who repeatedly fell apart on offence and were caught napping on defence.

Skipper Cooks (15 points) threw down a vicious dunk-of-the-year contender over 218cm Kai Sotto, eerily similar to his epic jam over Melbourne centre Isaac Humphries last month.

Cooks proved a tough cover for Adelaide's frontcourt early but his wayward foul shooting kept the visitors in the hunt and limited the dominant Kings' advantage to 24-17 at quarter-time.

Sydney bossed the second term but Robert Franks' three on the halftime buzzer trimmed Sydney's cushion to 48-38.

Justin Simon's athletic dunk in transition via Walton's no-look dish in the third capped an 8-0 run before Cooks soared for his even bigger slam over Sotto later in the quarter.

The 36ers closed to within eight late in the term before Sydney responded with an 11-0 run either side of three-quarter-time to stroll home.

"We were a little tired and it takes a lot out of you to come back the way we did (after Friday's come-from-behind win over Cairns)," Sixers coach CJ Bruton said.

"You have good days and bad days."
