Swiss Rockslide Tragedy: One Found, Two Missing

The highway A13 between Lostallo and Soazza is seen destroyed by the force of the Moesa river, caused by heavy rain in the Misox valley, in Lostallo, southern Switzerland, Sunday, June 23, 2024. Autho

Rescuers in Switzerland have discovered the body of one of the three individuals who went missing following a rockslide triggered by severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the southeastern part of the country. The search continues for the other two missing persons.

Amid the tragic incident, one woman was successfully rescued from the debris earlier on Saturday morning. The Swiss Federal Council member expressed his condolences, acknowledging the somber atmosphere that has enveloped the region.

A dedicated team of 200 rescuers, equipped with excavators, specialized search dogs, drones, and army helicopters, has been tirelessly combing the area since Saturday. However, the chances of finding the remaining missing individuals alive are slim, as confirmed by the head of the rescue operations.

Search efforts had to be temporarily suspended overnight due to adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall. The rockslide impacted a cluster of three houses in the municipality of Lostallo, situated in the picturesque Alpine valley of Misox in Graubünden.

Furthermore, Swiss authorities reported that a section of the A13 motorway, a crucial transit route connecting the San Bernardino Pass to Roveredo in Graubünden, has been severely damaged and submerged by flooding. The extensive destruction caused by the flooding is expected to keep this vital roadway closed for an extended period, possibly lasting several months.
