Swimming ban in place for two popular Dublin beaches due to high bacteria levels

Dubliners are being warned that there is a ban on swimming at Burrow Beach in Sutton and Front Strand in Balbriggan due to harmful bacteria.

Fingal County Council have confirmed that there is a "do not swim" notice up at Burrow Beach in Sutton after a power engine failure at a nearby pumping station. The engine failure at Mayne Bridge pumping station has caused "overflow discharge" to enter the water.

Bathers are being warned not to swim there due to a risk of illness caused by bacteria. The warning was issued on Tuesday and will remain in place until Friday, 16 June.

Fingal County Council said: "Burrow Beach remains open but beach users are asked to respect the ‘Do Not Swim’ notice as it has been put in place to ensure that the health of bathers is not compromised."

Fingal County Council have said the power has since been restored at the pumping station. The council added that the HSE has been consulted.

There's also a "do not swim" notice in place at Front Strand Balbriggan, which is expected to last six days. It comes after tests on Monday found that there was "elevated levels" of bacteria in the water.

Fingal County Council said: "Likely cause: Water quality deteriorated due to suspected impacts from animals/birds and contamination of urban surface waters discharging into bathing water."

Front Strand remains open, but beach goers are asked to respect the Do Not Swim notice. The notice been put in place to ensure that the health of bathers is not compromised.

The council added that a water quality sample has been arranged, and the HSE has been consulted.
