SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress review − flippable firmness to suit every sleeper

A Sweetnight Prime Memory Foam Mattress in a modern farmhouse-style bedroom.

When I first got the email through about the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress, I had to read it twice. I couldn't understand how one bed could offer four firmness profiles, but I knew it could be the solution to my age-old argument with my husband about what makes a good mattress.

The SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress is flippable, with a plush side as well as a firmer surface. When you rotate the mattress, you can switch between a softer and firmer feel on either side of the bed. A flippable mattress is the perfect solution for people like me and my husband, who share a bed, but not a sleep style.

As an H&G sleep expert, I'm part of the search to find the world's best mattress. I score each bed for comfort, cooling, and cost to help you find the mattress that meets your sleep needs and comes in under budget. I think that the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress has something for everyone. Best of all − it's not even that expensive.

SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress review

I decided to test the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress in my family camper van, where we often have guests to stay. A flippable bed with four firmness profiles offers flexible support to suit every sleeper. It would also make a great mattress for a guest room.

Who would the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress suit?

  • Front, back, and side sleepers: thanks to its four flippable firmness profiles, the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress is designed to support all sleep positions. I tend to sleep on my stomach and found that, in each quadrant, the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress has sufficient support to keep my spine from arching.
  • Anyone who shares a bed: the whole point of the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress is to accommodate couples with different sleep styles. If one of you prefers a firmer surface, while the other needs something softer, you could both sleep comfortably in your respective quadrants.
  • Hot sleepers: for a memory foam mattress, the SweetNight Prime is surprisingly breathable. I tested it right through the summer and never once woke up in a hot sweat.
  • Light sleepers: the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress boasts excellent motion isolation. That's good news for light sleepers and anyone who shares a bed with a pet or partner: you shouldn't stir, even when they're tossing and turning on their side of the bed.

What is the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress like to sleep on?

  • Comfort: the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress comes with multiple firmness profiles. There's one firm side and one plush side on the top and bottom of the mattress. On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, I'd say the firmer side feels like a 7: supportive, but not solid. The plush side feels more like a 6, with plenty of give to cushion your joints, but not so much give that you start to sink into the mattress. I switched between the two sides of the bed throughout the testing process and managed to sleep comfortably every night.
  • Support: I started testing the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress towards the end of my fifth pregnancy, when pressure relief and support was at the top of my mind. In pregnancy, your hips, back, stomach, legs, and pretty much most of your body needs some assistance to really relax. I found that each firmness profile of the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress offered something new and different to help me unwind. When my hip pain flared up, I slept on the softer quadrant to relieve some pressure. When my back started to ache, I moved to the firmer quadrant for more structured sleep.
  • Cooling: I didn't have high hopes for the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress when it comes to cooling. Thick foam doesn't leave much room for air to flow. As a hot sleeper in her third trimester, I was feeling nervous. Luckily, the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress incorporates layers of gel memory foam to dissipate heat and wick moisture.

  • Motion isolation: to measure the motion isolation of a mattress, I usually fill a glass with water and set it in the center of the bed. The more the glass moves, and the more the water spills, the worse the motion isolation, and the less suitable the bed for light sleepers. I decided to conduct a slightly different test with the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress: I asked one of my kids to jump around on one side of the mattress, while I tried to relax on the other. That's how I know the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress offers outstanding motion isolation: I could hardly feel the movement on the other side of the bed.
  • Edge support: unusually for a memory foam mattress, the SweetNight Prime boasts excellent edge support. I could comfortably sit on each side of the bed to tie my shoes without worrying that I'd slip off the sides. That's particularly good news for stomach sleepers who like to lie on the side of the bed.
  • Sleep trial: the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress comes with a 100-night mattress sleep trial. That's just enough time to test your bed through several seasons before you commit to your purchase. If you're an indecisive shopper, I suggest you look for a bed with a longer sleep trial. The Nectar Memory Foam Mattress comes with a 365-night sleep trial, which gives you a whole year to make up your mind.
  • Warranty: the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress comes with a 10-year mattress warranty. That might not sound quite as impressive as a lifetime warranty, but it's more than sufficient for a memory foam mattress. Within 10 years, your bed will have incurred enough indents and impressions that you'll be looking to replace it, anyway.

How does the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress rate online?

The SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress boasts a 4.8 average star rating from 54 verified customer reviews. Almost all of the reviews mention the custom comfort and sturdy support of the mattress, along with the excellent customer service from SweetNight.

One review is particularly effusive, declaring that the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress is 'an insomniac's dream. Struggling with insomnia for most of my life, it has been difficult for me to find a mattress that can get me comfortable enough to fall asleep and stay asleep. This is the one!' The lowest rating I could find was still four stars, proof of the SweetNight Prime's popularity. 'While it's not a complete game-changer,' says the customer in question, 'it's still a significant improvement over my old mattress'.

Should I buy the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress?

The RRP for a Queen-sized SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress is $1,309.99, but you can almost always find it listed for less in the mattress sales. I saw it selling for less than half-price in the 4th of July sales. When I consider the performance of the bed against its price, I can't think of a good reason not to buy the SweetNight Prime Memory Foam Mattress.

How we test mattresses

(Image credit: Future / Kaitlin Madden)

We put a lot of thought into how we test mattresses. Our sleep experts sample beds for months, ideally through several seasons, to monitor their performance over time, paying close attention to thermoregulation. We assess each bed against the same criteria: comfort; support; cooling properties; motion isolation; edge support; and weight bearing capacity.

Some of our tests are more subjective. The best way to measure the comfort of a mattress is to sleep on it and see how you feel. Others are more subjective. We use a system of weights and water glasses to measure the motion isolation of a mattress. We also consider the practical aspects of buying a mattress, from sleep trials to warranties, including details of delivery.

Where possible, we like to compare our findings against verified customer reviews to bring you a range of perspectives on the same product. Finally, we bring it all back to the price to help you determine value for money.
