A Place in the Sun presenter Jonnie Irwin 's wife has a touching way of telling him she loves him since his terminal cancer diagnosis, after she shared her fear on becoming a single mum to their three young sons.
Jonnie, who presents A Place in the Sun and Escape to the Country, revealed he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in November last year leaving him with six months to live.
The TV presenter has three children with his wife Jess, having met in 2015.
Jess, 40, has admitted she feels angry at the cruel disease for stealing the best years away from the young family.
In an effort to support her husband, Jess has ensured Jonnie knows he is loved everyday.
Each time Jonnie, 49, is away, she slips “a little card in his wash bag just telling him how proud I am of him”.
“The reality is you cannot cross every T and dot all the I’s. It’s just impossible," Jess told The Sun.
“I keep telling him that no matter how much he tries and stresses himself out, there’s still going to be the s*** that will come after.
“I keep saying, ‘Do what makes you happy, if you want to do something just do it.’ I just want to be able to bring any bit of fun and enjoyment back into his life which is really hard to do, especially with the reality of how much he’s struggling on a day-to-day basis.”
Jess feels she hasn't had time to think about the enormity of their situation and is "in denial about a lot of it".
The couple kept the news from the public until November last year when Jonnie’s appearance began to change.
Jonnie has since given Jess his blessing to meet someone else, but she won't entertain the idea.
Jess admits life will be very different than planned for her and their children Rex, Rafa and Cormac.
“It terrifies me that I’m suddenly going to be in a house on my own, the sole adult with three young boys. The prospect of being a single mum and a widow is awful to think about," she said.
In his latest heartbreaking update, Jonnie says he is feeling "weak" but is "still here".
But was left feeling "frustrated" as he faced difficulties while playing football with his son.
The couple have decided not to tell their children what lies in front of them.
Jonnie recently celebrated his 50th birthday early with a big party, ahead of the milestone in November.
