Swedish tech firm Getinge moving to Derby business park and plans to make new headquarters a 'global centre of excellence for chemistry'

A Swedish medical technology firm is opening its new headquarters in Derby and has vowed to make its city base a “global centre of excellence for chemistry”.

Getinge is bringing its HQ and training academy to St Modwen Park near Pride Park later this year, and local officials say the move could bring big long-term benefits for the city.

Getinge's new Derby offices will house its chemistry business alongside its UK sales offices, service functions and logistics operations and a training academy.

It will feature Getinge’s new “global centre of excellence for chemistry", which will employ microbiologists and chemists to create new products and solutions for the healthcare industry.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) has been told the company’s investment will create around 25 to 30 new jobs in the city.

The company, which bought Derby-based Quadralene in 2020, aims to have the new centre open by August.

Building work on the £46m St Modwen Park Derby started last year. Boiler firm Vaillant has already been announced as the park's first occupier in a move that will create some 200 jobs.

Getinge, St Modwen Logistics and Derby business leaders have been talking about the potential move for at least two years.

Bob Newsome, managing director of the Centre of Excellence Chemistry at Getinge, said: “By relocating to this new, larger facility we continue to execute on our strategic ambition to widen our infection control portfolio towards consumables, developed and manufactured in-house, which will make our financial performance more robust and sustainable.”

Robert Richardson, development director at St Modwen Logistics, said: “This deal has been a real triumph for teamwork and relationships. St Modwen Logistics has been working with Bob and his team for more than three years to understand the business needs of Getinge to ensure that we developed the type of versatile building necessary to support their operations. We are thrilled to finally be able to welcome another great manufacturer into St Modwen Park Derby."

Cllr Chris Poulter, leader of Derby City Council, said: “This is another brilliant piece of news for Derby.

“Getinge is an internationally recognised industry leader, serving hospitals and life science institutions across the world and we’re thrilled that they have chosen to invest in our city, creating more jobs, providing a boost to our economy and continuing to put Derby on the map as a prime location for investment."

John Forkin, managing director of Marketing Derby, said: “This is a really important investment that delivers genuine growth in a long-standing local company, as well as significant international investment in Derby. We first met with the Getinge team at our London Embassy in 2021 and have been working closely with our colleagues at the city council, as well as St Modwen Logistics and Innes England, to land this. Getinge is a £2.5bn turnover medtech company, which we believe will thrive in Derby and bring significant benefits to the city."
