Swedish Prosecutors Drop Rape Investigation Involving Soccer Star

Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe celebrates after he scored his side's first goal during the Champions League opening phase soccer match between Atalanta and Real Madrid at the Bergamo's stadium, in Bergam

Swedish prosecutors have announced the closure of a rape investigation linked to soccer star Kylian Mbappé's visit to Stockholm in October. The lead investigator stated that insufficient evidence led to the decision to drop the case, which revolved around an incident at a hotel. While a person was initially suspected of rape and sexual assault, the evidence did not support further proceedings, and the investigation has been terminated.

The suspect was not publicly identified by prosecutors, but numerous Swedish media outlets pointed to Real Madrid striker Mbappé, who was in Stockholm during a break from the Spanish league. Mbappé's legal team had previously refuted these reports as false. Following the announcement, neither Mbappé's lawyer nor his representatives have issued any immediate comments.

In a recent interview on French TV, Mbappé expressed surprise at the allegations and stated that Swedish authorities had not contacted him regarding the investigation. He emphasized his lack of involvement in the matter and described the situation as unexpected and incomprehensible.

The 25-year-old soccer sensation visited Stockholm on October 10 during an international break instead of representing France in the Nations League. Shortly thereafter, reports emerged in Swedish media about the rape investigation. While prosecutors confirmed the commencement of the inquiry at the time, they refrained from providing further details.

This development marks the conclusion of the investigation, with no charges being brought against the individual in question. The case has garnered significant attention due to Mbappé's high-profile status in the world of soccer.
