Sweden's domestic security agency, SAPO, is currently investigating a potential act of terrorism after a dangerous object was discovered at the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm. The incident occurred earlier this week, and SAPO has taken over the investigation from Stockholm police.
Details about the object have not been disclosed by the police, but some Swedish media outlets have referred to it as a hand grenade. The object was found near the fence of the embassy, which is situated in the eastern part of Stockholm. As soon as embassy staff spotted the potentially dangerous item, they promptly alerted the authorities.
Upon receiving the report, dozens of officers were dispatched to the scene, and the area was quickly sealed off. A bomb squad was called in to assess and handle the situation. In order to ensure the safety of everyone involved, the police spokesperson stated that the object was ultimately destroyed. Thankfully, no evacuations were required, and no arrests have been made thus far.
In light of the incident, SAPO has taken charge of the investigation, classifying it as a potential 'terrorist crime through grossly illegal threats and attempts to cause public destruction.' At this stage, the agency has declined to provide further comments, as the investigation is still in its preliminary phase.
Reacting to the incident, Israeli Ambassador Ziv Nevo Kulman took to social media to address the attempted attack against the Embassy of Israel in Stockholm and its employees. In a tweet on X (formerly known as Twitter), Ambassador Kulman expressed resilience, stating, 'We will not be intimidated by terror.'
The discovery of a potentially dangerous object at a diplomatic mission is deeply concerning, and both Swedish and Israeli authorities are working diligently to investigate the incident and ensure the safety and security of all involved. As the investigation progresses, further details are expected to emerge, shedding more light on the incident.
