Swansea road closures announced as 'dilapidated' building to be demolished over next three months

A dilapidated building which was once home to two shops in Swansea will be removed entirely over the next 13 weeks, meaning some road closures will be in place. Scaffolding, concrete blocks and fencing currently surround the building at 226 High Street. It has been sealed off in recent months as a precaution, due to "a risk of masonry collapsing onto the public footway".

Demolition plans have now progressed with a specialist contractor and Swansea Council, after applicants Coastal Housing Group were given the go-ahead to bring the building down on April 14. It is not the only building surrounded by scaffolding in Swansea city centre at the moment. Shops and cafes along Princess Way have been covered in it since 2018. The High Street works will mean some road closures will be in place due to the tricky location of the building and to protect the public. Closures will be limited to Sundays only from May 29 until June 12. You can sign up to the latest newsletters featuring news from the Swansea area by clicking here.

Coastal Housing's executive director of growth and new business, Kelly Thomas said: “We are mindful of the disruption our health and safety measures for the building have caused for users of High Street in recent months and are pleased to be bringing this to an end by September 2022. We have worked closely with highways and our demolition contractors to design a programme of works that limits further disruption and will quickly restore normal pedestrian and traffic flows to the street.

“In order to protect the public during demolition works, some road closures will be necessary owing to the location of the building. However, we have minimised these as far as possible to limit disruption for users of High Street. Closures will be limited to Sundays only, starting from May 29 and ending on the June 12.”

The area of High Street impacted will be "in a north easterly direction from its junction with Welcome Lane and College Street to its junction with B4290 Alexandra Road and Ivey Place, a distance of approximately 380 metres."
