Swansea Council u-turn over Swan Lake ballet performance at Grand Theatre after company drops 'Russia' from its title

Swansea Council has cancelled a scheduled performance of Swan Lake after the company behind it dropped the 'Russia' branding in part of its name and offered assurances over its status.

The show was scheduled for later this year, November 16, but following the Russian military action in Ukraine, there were concerns about any events appearing to be linked with the country - leading to several shows being cancelled elsewhere in the UK.

Swansea Council initially confirmed that the show would continue under a new name but has now reversed its decision - cancelling the show entirely.

The Swansea event was being delivered by England-based Amande Concerts which dropped "Russian State Opera" from its brand name and became Classical Ballet and Opera House.

Swansea Council had said it was confident the staging of the event reflected the local authority's stance on matters unfolding in Ukraine.

But today a Swansea Council spokesperson said: "Although the promoters have stated that they have no connection with the Russian political state, we consider it inappropriate to stage the show at this point. We have informed the promoters that the show is cancelled. Those who have bought tickets will be refunded.

“The Grand Theatre offers a wide, engaging and increasingly diverse programme as it continues to play a key role in Swansea’s cultural life. The recent launch of our Grand Ambition initiative will help the theatre attract new audiences and develop local talent.

“The council supports the venue, has maintained it in excellent condition through the pandemic and we look forward to audiences enjoying its forthcoming rich and varied programme.”

“We deplore the unacceptable aggression that President Putin has taken against the people of Ukraine, bringing war once more to the continent of Europe. We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Swansea is known for being a city of sanctuary and as such we stand ready to support any people who are displaced following the terrible actions taken by the president of Russia by invading a sovereign state.”

A number of sporting and cultural events linked to Russia have been cancelled around the world in protest at the country's actions in Ukraine.

WalesOnline has contacted Amande Concerts for comment.
