Swansea City transfer news as Rangers tipped to return for Whittaker and Martin gives update on injured duo

Here's your round-up of all the latest Swansea City news for Wednesday, February 22.

Rangers still keen on Whittaker

Scottish Premiership giants Rangers remain interested in Swansea City forward Morgan Whittaker.

That's according to Ibrox legend Alan Hutton, who believes Michael Beale could rekindle his interest in the forward this summer.

The Swans rejected several bids during the recent January window for the 22-year-old, who impressed during his loan at Plymouth earlier in the season.

And Hutton believes the Englishman will still be on his old club's radar this summer.

He told Football Insider: “Just because it did not happen in January does not mean that they won’t go back in.

“I think they will. It is obviously a player that Michael Beale likes.

“He gives you a different sort of option from the right, coming in on the left. I think they have missed that area of the pitch. I think they will revisit it if they can make it happen in the summer. It did not quite work in January but I think it is someone that will still be high up on Michael Beale’s list.“

Martin hoping goal is just the start

Meanwhile, having seen the forward net in the 3-1 defeat to Stoke City, Russell Martin hopes Whittaker can establish himself as a key part of his plans.

Whittaker netted inside the first minute of what was otherwise a hugely disappointing evening for the Swans, who went down to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Potters.

“Morgan did really, really well, and I am pleased for him,” he said.

“He wants to play in the middle of the pitch, he does not really want to be out wide but he did great when he was out there, as well.

“His flexibility will help us, his finishing ability will help us and we are looking forward to seeing him have a strong finish to the season.”

Cundle and Fulton update

Martin also revealed Jay Fulton and Luke Cundle missed Tuesday night's defeat due to injuries picked up against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend.

However, he's is hopeful of having both available for Monday’s game against Rotherham United at the Swansea.com Stadium.

“Both were injured at the weekend. It’s nothing major and we hope to have them back for Monday,” he added.

“They were a loss for us tonight, which was a bit frustrating.”

Martin's plea for patience

Russell Martin says he understand the frustrations of Swansea City fans, but has pleaded for patience as his side look to arrest their poor run of form.

Tuesday's defeat to the Potters means Swansea have won just four of their last 20 games in all competitions, and the pressure is clearly starting to build on the Swans boss.

"I get the negativity over the last five weeks since January and people only look at the results," he said. "That's what people who support their club care about and I get that. But we care as much about this club as the local supporters.

"At times we've had real clarity on the way we're doing things which has filtered down through the club, but often people don't care about the bigger picture.

"But we were given three [targets] when we came. Bring back the Swansea way of dominating the ball, promote young players that can become assets for the club and get as close to the play-offs as possible.

"I think we've ticked the first two, but the budget effects the third.

"But what we're trying to achieve is not going to happen overnight. We're on a journey and it's a painful one.

"I take huge inspiration from someone like Arteta. He lost nine out of 10 at one point with a young team, but he understood the big picture and how much they would learn from those moments and the benefit is huge. The clarity and vision he had was amazing."
