Swansea City transfer news as Champions League winner calls transfer target 'a shining light' and Reading join defender hunt

These are your latest Swansea City headlines on Tuesday, June 7.

Ogbene 'a shining light'

Champions League winner Didi Hamann singled out Republic Ireland's Chiedozie Ogbene for praise following their recent defeat to Armenia.

The 25-year-old, who has been linked with Swansea this summer, was the only player who showed attacking endeavour, according to the former Liverpool man. "Apart from Ogbene, there was no threat whatsoever. Robinson no, Parrott no, Hendrick was poor today," Hamann said on RTE.

"The subs who came on, Knight, Keane, they didn’t do anything for the game, they didn’t do anything positive. Ogbene has been a shining light."

Swansea would need to see players leave before making any move for the Rotherham United man, who still has a year left on his Millers contract after signing an extension. He set tongues wagging last month when he mentioned Swansea.

“My future is unknown but right now I am a Rotherham United player,” said Ogbene to Irish media. “I am quite happy at Rotherham but they know I am quite ambitious and aware of me wanting to reach the next level.

“They have said that if someone gives me the opportunity to operate at the level I want to, they won’t stand in the way. Every player wants to be at a stable and established club – especially a big one like Swansea City. At this stage of my career, it’s really important to be playing games and at the highest level I can get to.”

Reading keen on Sorinola

TeamTalk report that Swansea's Championship rivals Reading are keen on Matthew Sorinola.

Swansea links to the youngster go back to earlier this year; Russell Martin worked with the youngster during their time at MK Dons.

Recent reports suggest Norwich City, Celtic and Rangers were keeping tabs on him, with the Royals the latest in a line of suitors. Sources in Belgium indicated to WalesOnline Sorinola could yet stay in the Jupiler Pro League next season, where he currently plies his trade with Union SG.

Plymouth game to go ahead

Swansea's pre-season trip to Plymouth Argyle is set to go ahead as planned despite vandals wrecking the Home Park pitch.

A break-in at the ground on Saturday saw a tractor being driven across the pitch, which had only recently been renovated.

The police are now involved, with the club issuing a statement revealing 'significant damage' had been caused amid 'such mindless destruction'.

Swansea are due to face the League One side Tuesday, July 12 (7.30pm), with Bristol City heading there on Saturday, July 16.

At present, the games are to go ahead as planned. An Argyle spokesperson told our colleagues at PlymouthLive : "The grounds team and renovation partners set to work immediately on repairing the damage following Saturday night's break in.

"Through immediate response and paying for some additional contractor support, the setback to the timetable has been limited to one week, and so this is unlikely to necessitate a change in the club's pre-season schedule.

"Should the situation change, the club will promptly update supporters and stakeholders as a matter of course."

Palmer wanted by Sky Blues

Former Swansea loan man Kasey Palmer is closing in on a move to Coventry City.

Swansea's rivals Cardiff City were understood to be in talks with Palmer, who is surplus to requirements at Bristol City. He has another year left on his Ashton Gate contract, but a move to the Bluebirds didn't materialise, with other options now being looked at.

The Sky Blues are now on the prowl, with the club's assistant manager and first-team coach Adi Viveash having worked with Palmer during their time together at Chelsea.

Palmer made a dozen appearances for Swansea during the 2020-21 season under Steve Cooper.
