Swansea City transfer headlines as new signing announced after deadline and Jamie Paterson talks held this morning

These are your Swansea City headlines on Tuesday, February 1

Swans bring in signing after deadline

Swansea have announced the signing of young defender Jack Stafford.

The 20-year-old will join up with Kristian O'Leary's under-23s squad and went straight into the squad for the youngsters' Professional Development League clash with Millwall on Tuesday afternoon.

Stafford joins after a successful trial with the club. He spent a recent spell with Irish side Waterford FC.

The defender came through the academy at Exeter City before joining Waterford back in February 2021, going on to make 28 appearances for the club.

Swansea have dealt with Waterford before, with Cameron Evans having spent a loan stint there last year.

Pato talks held this morning

Russell Martin and Jamie Paterson held talks on Tuesday morning in order to thrash out the attacking midfielder's future.

Paterson has missed Swansea's last four games and won't feature this evening against Luton after a contract dispute with the club.

QPR made three attempts to sign him in the final throes of the transfer window but the 30-year-old remains a Swansea player.

Martin is keen to reintegrate the playmaker back into his squad, with 20 games of the campaign still to go.

Whatever the result of these talks, it is expected that Paterson will take some time to build up his fitness before any return to first-team action.

Giles deal 'not sanctioned'

Swansea had the chance to sign Wolves' Ryan Giles - but the move was not sanctioned.

Giles had spent the first half of the season at Cardiff City on loan, impressing for the Bluebirds. His form pushed his parent club to recall him but he failed to make an appearance for the Molineux club on his return.

Cardiff were hopeful of re-signing the youngster but with Wolves dragging their feet over a decision, manager Steve Morison moved on to other targets.

A chance presented itself to Swansea but decision-makers didn't give the green light. Giles subsequently joined Blackburn on loan for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign.

Brighton deal collapsed

A Swansea deal for Brighton's Ryan Longman - who clinched a permanent move to Hull City following a loan stint with the Tigers - collapsed during the January transfer window.

The move was all wrapped up but the deal was pulled at the 11th hour after a call from the US and Swansea's owners.

It amounted to a frustrating January transfer window for Russell Martin, who missed out on bringing in another striker this month.
