Swansea City to miss out on Matt O'Riley as Celtic to clinch deal for MK Dons man

Swansea City look set to miss out on a deal for Milton Keynes Dons midfielder Matt O'Riley.

Russell Martin has been eager to bring the 21-year-old to south Wales from his former club this month.

However, O'Riley appears destined to secure a move to Celtic before the January 31 transfer deadline.

Head coach Martin recently revealed that a "certain level of investment" would be required to secure the services of O'Riley.

"Matt O’Riley is a fantastic player but he’s an MK Dons player. He would be a permanent addition that would take a certain level of investment for him to become a player away from MK Dons," said the head coach.

"Before we do any business, especially permanently, it will take investment coming in."

It's understood Swansea did not table any bids for the midfielder this month, although there were regular talks over a possible swoop, but finances ensured a deal could not be struck between the Swans and the Dons.

Speaking about O'Riley before the FA Cup third-round loss to Southampton, Martin added: "I wish him nothing but success in his career. He’s having a fantastic season and lucky for MK Dons they have a player with so much ability."

It comes as Swansea are poised to recruit Hannes Wolf on loan from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The Austrian will spend the remainder of the season with the Swans - who could well lose Jamie Paterson this month.

Wolf, 22, is expected to seal a transfer to the Swansea.com Stadium before Saturday's Championship clash with Preston North End.

Swansea have already brought in O'Riley's MK Dons team-mate Andy Fisher on a permanent deal in the January window while Cyrus Christie has joined on loan from Fulham.
