Swansea City's transfer issue could rumble on for a month as Russell Martin gives update on wing-back search

Russell Martin remains relaxed on his search for a new wing-back this summer and admits any further business is likely to go down to the wire this summer.

The Swans, who open their Championship campaign at Rotherham United on Saturday, have already brought four new faces on board in this window, including Nathan Wood, Harry Darling, Matthew Sorinola and Joe Allen, but still have areas they would like to strengthen.

The departure of Cyrus Christie has left something of a hole in their options out wide - a reality not lost on the Swans boss.

"You can look at it and it's a position we probably haven't replaced as well as we have done with Hannes (Wolff)," he said. "It's definitely one we're working on and on we're looking at, making sure we get the right one for us.

"But it depends on so much. So much about football is timing. We'll just have to wait and see. It's something we would like to do at some point. But if not we're more than happy with who's going to play tomorrow."

The departure of Flynn Downes has been hugely beneficial to Swansea's ability to do business so far, with the midfielder's exit the main catalyst in Allen's eventual homecoming to the squad.

And it seems highly likely that another exit will be needed if the Swans are to bring in further new recruits. The likes of Ryan Bennett and Nathaneal Ogbeta have previously been told they are free to leave, and have already attracted interest.

But, so far, there hasn't yet been any sign of a breakthrough, and Martin admits there doesn't appear to be anything imminent in terms of the exit door swinging open, with potential suitors keeping a close eye on the purse strings.

"There's been discussions ongoing for a long while with some of the players and I think some of them just really want to go and play football now," he added. "The window is still going for another four weeks and these things have a tendency to drag on until quite late.

"Especially in the lower leagues, because everyone wants to save as much money as possible. So, it they can go three or four weeks without paying a player on loan that they don't really need, but really want then it changes the landscape a little bit, which I understand.

"I'm pretty confident that everyone that wants to go out and play more football and isn't perhaps going to play much football here will end up going. It's just a case of when.

"I think the next three weeks will tell us a lot about what we need. Whatever team we put out on Saturday I'll be really happy with. We always want specialists in certain positions. But no one here is stressing about it.

"Ideally before the end of the month, we'd like another specialist in that position. That wide right, wingback position. Whatever you want to call it.

"If it doesn't happen it's not disastrous. Then after the next three weeks, it will probably tell us what else we need. But we're really pleased with what we've got."
