Swansea City's top January transfer target revealed as fresh loan unlikely and exit imminent

Swansea City have identified Chiedozie Ogbene as their prime January transfer window target, WalesOnline understands.

The Swans are huge admirers of the Rotherham United attacker and monitored his progress during the summer window.

After being unable to recruit the Republic of Ireland international in the most recent transfer market, Swansea are now intent on bringing the 25-year-old to south Wales next month.

Ogbene was due to be out of contract last summer, but the Millers triggered a one-year extension option in his deal. However, he is yet to sign fresh terms with Matt Taylor's side and will now become a free agent in the summer of 2023.

It's understood the striker - who can also operate at right wing-back - is a huge admirer of the Swans and their style. Indeed, he publicly spoke of his admiration for the club earlier this year.

“Every player wants to be at a stable, established club, especially a big one like Swansea City," he said. “For me, it’s really important at this stage of my career to be playing games. That’s at the highest level I can get to.”

As is often the case with the Swans though, finances could well be a stumbling block. It's understood the Millers quoted £2m as the asking price for Ogbene when recently approached by a Belgian club.

Ogbene has netted seven goals in 21 appearances in all competitions for Rotherham so far this season, including the opener in the clash with Russell Martin's men on the opening day of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Swansea appear unlikely to re-sign Hannes Wolf after exploring the possibility of bringing the Austrian back to south Wales on loan from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Wolf enjoyed a successful spell with the Swans last term but is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury that has restricted him to just four Bundesliga appearances so far this term.

And while the Swans are determined to bolster their wing-back options next month, the German outfit now appear unlikely to send Wolf back out on loan.

Elsewhere, Fin Stevens is set to be recalled by parent club Brentford. The Wales Under-21 international joined the Swans on a season-long loan deal on deadline day in the summer window.

However, Stevens has featured just five times in the Championship for the Swans and is set to return to Thomas Frank's side in the New Year.

Brandon Cooper, Nathanael Ogbeta and Azeem Abdulai are among those who could leave Swansea on loan next month.
