Swansea City's Russell Martin among frontrunners for Norwich City job as Dean Smith sacked

Swansea City boss Russell Martin is reportedly among the early frontrunners to replace outgoing Norwich City boss Dean Smith at Carrow Road.

Smith was relieved of his duties by the Canaries following the Boxing Day defeat by Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, their third defeat in four games.

Indeed, Norwich have won just three of their last 13 games, a run that saw supporters start to turn on Smith, who was on the end of stinging criticism from the away end throughout the defeat to the Hatters.

Now, having been dismissed by the club, The Sun claims former Norwich defender Martin is among the frontrunners to take the reins in Norfolk, although it's thought that prising him away from Swansea could prove difficult.

Norwich, perhaps by virtue of being his former employers, have been mentioned as a possibility in the past, but Martin has been consistent in insisting he's happy in south Wales.

“I will end up where I end up," he told the BBC when recently asked about his ambitions.

“People ring me all the time and say you are linked with this job or that, what are you thinking? I don’t care about that. It’s not on my radar. I would never come out and say I am going to be here for 10 years – I don’t know what’s going to happen.

“But if I am still here in 10 years and still enjoying it as much as I am now, I would be happy with that – and I don’t think that’s a lack of ambition.

“I think the biggest ambition you can have is to love what you are doing every day, because that’s not easy to attain. I am really fortunate to have that.”
