Swansea City's Joel Piroe addresses transfer future and the unwavering confidence he has right now

Joel Piroe joined an illustrious group after scoring his 20th goal of the season against Derby County.

The Dutchman now features alongside Oli McBurnie, Wilfried Bony, Michu, Scott Sinclair, Jason Scotland and Lee Trundle on the list of players to hit 20 or more strikes in a single campaign for Swansea City since the club's stadium move in 2005. Piroe still has six games left to add to his tally - which, remarkably, does not include a single set-piece goal or a penalty.

Russell Martin has regularly noted Piroe's ability to remain calm in front of goal, regardless of any panic or chaos around him. And the 22-year-old's unwavering confidence perhaps makes his ruthlessness in key areas more understandable.

“I think it always came easily to me," Piroe said of his talents in front of the net. "A ball like this, rolled really slow to me, as a striker you have to be able to hit that clean.

"I just try to make the right decision. I try to recognise how much space I have before I get the ball. If you know that you have a lot of space, you can just pick a corner. If you see the goalkeeper is moving to the short corner, you can try to hit it in the long one and vice versa.”

The forward bagged three of his side's seven goals in a week which saw the Swans claim three successive triumphs for the first time under the current coaching regime. All three were first time strikes and required immense levels of precision and composure - two attributes Piroe has in abundance.

The frontman has clearly taken plenty from watching his childhood idols Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo [de Lima]. Although, while clearly fully confident in his capabilities, Piroe's astonishing debut campaign at Swansea is far beyond what the player himself expected.

“I knew in the previous seasons they had played the play-offs," he said. "I was hoping to score as many goals as possible.

“I didn’t really know how many games I would play, I was hoping to play at least 20 to 25 games and to develop, get into the English style of football.”

It hasn't all been plain sailing. Head coach Martin recently stated he never expected such an impressive goal-scoring streak from Piroe following his initial conversations with the striker early on in the campaign.

"I think it's gone very differently to how I thought it was going to go with Joel in the first week," the head coach said after the 2-0 win at West Brom in February. "The first chat we had, and I think Joel will tell you, it wasn't an overly positive one." You can read the full story here.

He recently stated his desire to reach 20 goals for the campaign, although, having hit that target with several games to spare, Piroe's sole aim is now to help Swansea extend their winning run.

“I just want to finish as well as possible," he added. "Now I have reached 20, I don’t want to stop scoring. I want to win as many games as possible.”

Such is the current position of the club financially, the Jack Army understandably hold major concerns regarding the future of their star striker. Following the conclusion of the current campaign, Piroe will still have two years left to run on his Swansea contract, although his stunning form will no doubt attract plenty of attention.

For the time being though, the former PSV Eindhoven man is only too happy to remain at the Swansea.com Stadium as he bids to continue his role in repaying the faith shown by fans since Martin and his fellow coaches arrived at the club in August.

“Of course I really enjoy my time here," responded Piroe when asked if he wants to stay at the club. "We hope to finish as strong as possible to show the fans that the trust they had in us, we are really fighting for them.

"Life in south Wales is very nice. The people are very, very kind – they always try to help you. They really make life easy for me here.”
