Swansea City's break has come at just the right time as players look off the pace

Swansea City will have a total of nine days between their hefty loss to Sheffield United and their trip to West Bromwich Albion.

The Swans were due to host Bournemouth on Tuesday night, although the fixture was postponed due to damage at the Swansea.com Stadium caused by storms.

After a torrid afternoon at Bramall Lane, the break could just what the doctor ordered for Russell Martin's side.

Swansea have 15 matches left to play this season, six of which come before the March international break.

The contest with the Cherries could well be rearranged to take place in the empty midweek slot between the matches against Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest on April 23 and April 30 respectively.

That would of course mean the Swans would play both on a weekend and in midweek for the remainder of the season - aside from prior to the final day clash with Queens Park Rangers on home soil.

A morale-boosting comeback win over Bristol City was sandwiched by woeful away showings against admittedly well-resourced Stoke City and Sheffield United sides.

Following Saturday's latest horrow show on the road, many fans feared the worst when it came to the visit of Bournemouth.

Olivier Ntcham - who did not have a pre-season before joining the Swans after leaving Celtic - has looked off the pace of late, with his showing in South Yorkshire last time out proving hugely frustrating. The Frenchman has not scored in any of his previous 12 outings while he has just two assists to his name all season - the most recent of which came back in November.

Captain Matt Grimes will no doubt be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the current break along with the one due in late March having played every single minute of league action for the Swans this term.

Indeed, the central midfielder has played a total of 450 minutes more than Ryan Manning who is second on the list for Swansea when it comes to Championship action played in head coach Martin's debut campaign at the club.

Cyrus Christie is another man who has been hurled in at the deep end since joining the Swans on loan from Fulham.

The Republic of Ireland international has been one of the club's best performers since he made the move to south Wales, although, having played just once at club level in the opening half of the season, Christie can be forgiven for feeling the pace of late.

The same can be repeated about others too.

Recovery has clearly been a concern for Russell Martin who took his squad to St George's Park after the 3-0 defeat to Stoke City having revealed his side were undercooked for their clash with Hull City after travelling back from Queens Park Rangers just days earlier.

Crucially, away from player welfare, there are patterns of play that need addressing over the coming days.

Andy Fisher has made five appearances since joining the club from MK Dons in January. The goalkeeper has been unfortunate in that the defence in front of him has changed drastically during that short period.

Ben Cabango, Flynn Downes, Ryan Bennett, Finley Burns, Ryan Manning and Kyle Naughton have all operated in the back three at various stages since Fisher's introduction into the squad which has made building crucial relationships remarkably difficult for the young goalkeeper.

Naughton is expected to be available for the clash with West Brom on Monday night after a spell on the sidelines with a thigh injury while Nathanael Ogbeta is likely to feature in March once he has fully recovered from a hamstring problem.

Hannes Wolf, who missed the contest with Sheffield United, will now have additional time to recover from a hamstring issue, and it all means Swansea - despite the thin nature of their squad - will be at full complement very soon.

The Swans have a more than healthy buffer between themselves and the relegation zone, although a rather sizeable chasm between the play-off places and their occupancy of 17th spot has emerged.

From Martin's recent comments, it appears as though the bigger picture is firmly being looked at as Swansea look to make significant improvements to the squad in the summer with a view to launching a serious assault on the top six next term.

However, the current break they've been granted will no doubt play a telling part in determining the confidence levels of the Jack Army going in to the 2022/23 campaign - with the West Brom game offering Swansea a chance to show what they're all about.
