Swansea City news as Darling celebrates 'goal of my career', club hit out over fans involved in trouble and Derby chase striker

Here are your Swansea City headlines for Sunday July 31 following the opening day draw up at Rotherham.

Darling surprises himself with wonder goal

New Swans signing Harry Darling admits he surprised himself with his wonder strike at Rotherham.

Darling's goal from distance cancelled out Rotherham's early opener and saw Russell Martin's men draw 1-1 in their Championship opener.

The big defender told the club's official website : "I’ve never scored a goal like that. It’s definitely my best goal."

Darling hit double figures in goals for MK Dons last season and continued: “I just got it and they hadn’t really closed me down so I thought, ‘Why not hit it?’ Luckily it’s gone in.

“I think it’ll be hard to replicate that goal, but I hope there are more to come from me."

Swans strongly condemn fans involved in trouble

Swansea City have 'strongly condemned' the fans involved in trouble at the end of the opening day draw with Rotherham.

The two clubs are working with South Yorkshire Police to "identify and subsequently punish" those responsible for an incident afterwards. Rotherham say the fans in question will not be welcome back to their ground.

The incident happened in the stands after the final whistle involving what Rotherham and Swansea say was a small number of fans from the two clubs. Almost 1,500 Swansea supporters were part of the 10,454 crowd.

In a statement, the Swans said: "Swansea City strongly condemns the behaviour of a small number of supporters. At the conclusion of a game played in a great spirit and a terrific atmosphere, there were instances of unacceptable, unsavoury behaviour involving Swansea and Rotherham fans in the south-east corner of the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

"That such behaviour should happen during a period where the club has worked closely with the EFL in promoting the ‘Love Football. Protect the Game' campaign - which has seen clubs across all three divisions stress the need to eradicate anti-social behaviour from our game – only adds to our sense of dismay.

"Ourselves and Rotherham will work together - and with South Yorkshire and South Wales Police - to identify those involved in the scenes witnessed after the full-time whistle. Such behaviour is simply not acceptable. We want to thank the large majority of Swans fans who – as always - behaved impeccably."

In a statement of their own Rotherham said they were "incredibly disappointed with the behaviour of a small number of supporters."

Martin - something to build on

Swans boss Russell Martin said he was happy enough with the opening day showing from his team but left frustrated by the failure to seize three points.

The Swans host Blackpool next and Martin said of the Rotherham draw: "I'm content with the performance, frustrated with the result. We created some brilliant chances."

One of those fell to Michael Obafemi near the end when he somehow contrived to miss an open goal.

"The chance we had - I am not sure we will get a clearer one than that all season," said Martin.

"But I think the supporters who came will have enjoyed the performance. It's a point. It gives us something to build on."

Draw fair result - Rotherham boss

Rotherham manager Paul Warne reckons a draw was a fair result from the opening day clash in Yorkshire.

"We created enough chances to potentially win the game, but we could have lost it, so there's no complaint from me," was his take on the 90 minutes.

He said of Harry Darling's Swansea goal stunner from distance: "They have got a £1.5m centre-half who hits one in from 30 yards, top bag. That is an absolute joke of a goal.

"Apart from that, Obafemi had a really good chance, but I thought we limited them. If you see the physical outputs of my players today, I can't be prouder. I think it's a really positive start."

Derby chase Swans man - reports

Derby County want to sign Swans forward Kyle Joseph, according to reports on Sunday morning.

The 20-year-old is behind Joel Piroe and Michael Obafemi in the Swans pecking order and Derby are said to feel they can give him greater playing time.

There are suggestions Russell Martin could let Joseph and Liam Cullen go to free up squad space for further arrivals before the summer transfer window closes.

Ramsey set to move abroad

Wales star Aaron Ramsey could follow Gareth Bale to America, according to new reports.

The Mail reckon the midfield ace is weighing up offers from French club Nice and MLS side Charlotte and will make a decision on his future shortly.

It is claimed Charlotte have offered to make the 31-year-old their best paid player on a two year deal. Ramsey had his Juventus contract terminated last week.

Ramsey needs regular football before heading out to the World Cup with Wales.
