Swansea City headlines as Martin talks up strides made by Cabango and Nathan Jones explains his goal celebrations against Swans

Here are the latest Swansea City headlines on Wednesday April 20.

Martin believes Swans heading in right direction and cites Cabango strides

Russell Martin insists Swansea City have a bright future under him despite throwing away a 4-1 lead against Reading on Easter Monday.

“If you look at where we were at the start of the season to where we are now, I think everyone can see a big difference and a big improvement. Look at how much players like Ben Cabango have come on, I feel so proud of the players when they play as they did during that first hour at Reading," he said.

“We played some outstanding stuff, I enjoyed watching us, which is the whole point. We were brought here for a long-term project. I am convinced that this club is the best place for us, and we are the right fit for this club.”

Swansea have four games left, against the promotion pushing quartet of Middlesbrough, Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers.

Jones explains extravagant goal celebrations

Nathan Jones has spoken of his extravagant goal celebrations after his Luton side beat Swansea earlier in the season.

Growing up in the Rhondda valley, Jones was brought up a Cardiff City fan and couldn’t contain his excitement. His celebrations are notably more muted these days than the raucous scenes he caused when the Hatters beat the Swans.

"There's a reason for that," he says. Jones has strong ties with the Bluebirds and his love for the club has never waned.

When WalesOnline asks him if he still supports Cardiff, he replies: "Absolutely. I grew up in the Rhondda valley where all my mates were Cardiff fans. I had the chance to sign for Bristol City or Cardiff City and I signed for Cardiff City.

"I worked on the turnstiles when I was an apprentice and then rushed and watched all the games. All my mates came down and then we would all go back and chat about the games. I love Cardiff City.

"I grew up in the Rhondda and it's either Cardiff or Swansea. There's probably more Cardiff fans in the Rhondda valley than Swansea. I want to see Welsh football do well. I played for Merthyr. I want to see Merthyr do well and Newport. It's better when Wrexham, Newport, Cardiff do well."

Luton have all-but secured their place in this year’s play-offs, after a 1-0 win away to Jones’ beloved Bluebirds on Easter Monday.

Swans join campaign with 'Boro game

The Swans have joined Amnesty International's 'Football Welcomes' campaign.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the campaign aims to welcome refugees and people seeking asylum. By looking at players who are themselves from refugee backgrounds, it shows the power of football in bringing people together.

The club will be dedicating Saturday’s match against Middlesbrough to the campaign, by inviting refugee families to the match as special guests, alongside local MP Carolyn Harris.

She said: “I’m delighted to see Swansea City joining other clubs to be part of the Football Welcomes initiative.

“The current crisis in Ukraine is a stark reminder of just how important it is that those who seek refuge are welcomed into our communities and offered support. Football brings people of all backgrounds together every week and so inviting those who have fled conflict to join fans at local matches is a perfect way to show that support."

Head of Football Welcomes at Amnesty International UK, Naomi Westland, said: “It’s heartening to see clubs like Swansea City using football as a powerful force for good, bringing people together and a providing a sense of belonging.”
