Swansea City headlines as Jamie Paterson's dad 'raging' and what Fisher did that left pundits groaning

These are your Swansea City headlines on Sunday, March 6.

Pato's dad 'raging'!

Jamie Paterson has joked that his dad is 'raging' after the attacking midfielder scored against Coventry City.

It was the first goal Paterson has scored since his reintroduction to the side following a spell out of the team due to a contract dispute.

And the opener against the Sky Blues - his boyhood club - was an absolute beauty. Not that his dad would have been too pleased, mind.

"Death , taxes and me scoring against the team I support! Dads raging. Back to back wins (sic)," he posted on Instagram after the game.

In his post-match interview, Paterson said that the win over West Brom at The Hawthorns on Monday night was the confidence booster he and his team-mates needed.

“You could see that (the win over West Brom gave the team confidence),” he said. “ We started with a lot of confidence and this league is about trying to put a run together, then you never know where it can take you.

“It is just about results, winning games, and the performances.

“We scored three goals today, and it is a good sign that the strikers are confident. It was comfortable in the end, we probably wanted to play better in the second half.

“We went 3-0 up early in the game but we were a bit disappointed with the second half, we played well in the first half so we just want to maintain that now.

“If you want to be successful your home form must be tip top. With the fans getting behind us, it makes a big difference. We need to make home a fortress and the last three here we have played really well so we need to carry that on.”

Fisher leaves pundits groaning

The Quest panel certainly enjoyed Swansea's performance against the Sky Blues, with two men in particular picked out for praise.

Michael Obafemi's brace was just reward for his form in recent weeks, with Colin Murray adding that head coach Russell Martin's blueprint at the Swansea.com Stadium appears to be coming through more clearly now.

"For Swansea, it's all about next season in a much more positive way," host Murray said.

"We are starting to see Russell Martin's imprint on them on a more consistent basis."

Pundit Ali Maxwell then commented on the role 'keeper Andy Fisher played in Obafemi's first strike.

"The fans are happy to trust the process as long as they can see the fruits of it, and today we saw some brilliant attacking play," he said.

"We also saw Fisher, the goalkeeper, clipping this ball into (Flynn) Downes (audible groans of appreciation), that is why Russell Martin was so keen to sign his former goalkeeper from MK Dons, to do that.

"Obafemi is the number nine that they need, stretching defences and benefiting. He's really kicked on this year and looks like a great striker, one to keep an eye on for the rest of the season."

As Maxwell was describing Fisher's pass to Downes, both Murray and Ian Holloway could be heard purring with delight in the background.

Oba: I love it here

Obafemi is a player enjoying his football right now.

His performances illustrate that, and his infectious personality is making him a fan favourite. The feeling is indeed mutual, with Obafemi revealing he is loving his time in south Wales.

After a difficult start by his own admission, he is shining bright right now.

“I’m delighted with the result, and I’m happy to get the assist and two goals,” Obafemi said.

“I want to help the team as much as possible with goals and assists.

“I love it here. The atmosphere when I play [at the Swansea.com Stadium] is always amazing. The fans always give me a great reception and I’m grateful for it.

“It was good that we got the win. I thought we played well in the first half, but in the second half we let ourselves down a bit because we got a bit sloppy. We’ll look at that and see if we can put it right.

“I wish we could have got the clean sheet, but we look forward and get ready for Tuesday.”

Robins' verdict on Swans

Coventry City boss Mark Robins admitted the quality of Swansea put doubt in his own players' heads on Saturday.

The manager said they were their "own worst enemies" in SA1, with poor finishing preventing them from getting anything out of the game.

Robins added that he didn't particularly rate Swansea's display either, feeling it was his side's mistakes which presented the hosts with opportunities to score.

"We would have liked to have played better, that’s for sure," he said.

“It was a mixture of them moving the ball; quality players sometimes put a little bit of doubt in your mind where you need to go.

“We got it wrong a couple of times and then we conceded goals but really, when they are playing balls in behind you and long balls in behind your defence that lead to one v ones with your goalkeeper who has had no saves to make it makes it difficult. He’s had zero saves to make in the game and we were three goals down due to our own mistakes.

“We had three one-on-ones ourselves and six really clear-cut chances and only taken the one, so that’s the disappointment and it didn’t look like us at all in the first half.

“We didn’t get close enough to them and looked a little bit leggy as well, so it is what it is. We have to look at this and do some learning from it because there is clearly some learning to come from it because if you make wrong decisions against them they try to drag you into areas you don’t want to be in.

“And you have to think your way through it as much as the physical side of the game. And if you don’t do that and are not sitting in and then hitting them, which isn’t what we are, then you can come a cropper, and really we did that and we were our own worst enemy.

“We have given them enough chances to go and win the game before they have even had to do anything, and I don’t think they were particularly great either.

“That’s not as good as I have seen them play but we gave them too much, maybe respect, I don’t know, but the chances we had, we have not had that many clear cut chances. When you go after these they give you chances and opportunities and unfortunately we didn’t take them.”
