Swansea City boss Russell Martin on the brink of Southampton move as compensation fee revealed

Swansea City will reportedly receive £400,000 Southampton in compensation for manager Russell Martin.

WalesOnline understands Martin has already agreed to take over at St Mary's, with the deal only held up due to negotiations over formalities including a compensation package.

According to talkSPORT, a financial agreement has now been reached to install the 37-year-old as the club's next manager. Indeed, the move could now be confirmed within the coming hours.

As he did when he left MK Dons, Martin set to take his backroom team with him to St Mary's, and will set about putting a regime in place which will aim to take the club back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Martin's exit has been on the cards since the end of last week, when it was revealed he had not travelled to the USA to meet the club's owners as previously planned.

There had been some suggestion the club were keen on extending Martin's current deal. Indeed, he himself had indicated on several occasions he would be open to staying at the club.

However, a frustrating January transfer window is understood to have put a dent in relations between Martin and the club's hierarchy, and frustrations and concerns have bubbled away in the background ever since. The club's owners were clearly unable to offer Martin concrete assurances over several key issues ahead of next season.

Attention will soon turn to Martin's successor, with Plymouth Argyle boss Steven Schumacher the early favourite with the bookies.
