Sydney hope captain Callum Mills and star forward Tom Papley will return from injury in a week after opening Dean Cox's era as coach with a 57-point win over GWS in match simulation.

Mills, battling what the Swans describe as mild plantar fascia injury in a foot, and Papley, recovering from a sprained ankle, missed Sydney's 19.11 (125) to 10.8 (68) victory over the Giants at Moore Park's Tramway Oval on Friday.

Swans forward Joel Amartey kicked six goals and teammate Braeden Campbell slotted four - both had four majors by halftime when Sydney had created a decisive 11.6 to 5.5 advantage.

GWS spearhead and reigning Coleman medallist Jesse Hogan booted three and Cody Angove, who was pick 24 at last year's draft, impressed by booting  two goals, as did teammate Aaron Cadman.

But Sydney's forwards fired against a Giants side without mainstays Tom Green, Sam Taylor and Stephen Coniglio, and recruit Jake Stringer.

Prime mover Green will miss at least a month and the start of the premiership season after suffering a calf strain last week, Stringer is ill, Taylor is under AFL concussion protocols and Coniglio was rested.

Sydney skipper Mills, Papley and veteran defender Jake Lloyd (foot bone bruising) will all face fitness tests to determine their availability to face Gold Coast in a trial game next Friday, when the Giants will host Collingwood in Canberra in a practice match.

Sydney's fast start came before heavy rain made conditions difficult after half-time, though proven performers Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner and Ollie Florent continued to be prolific ball-winners for last year's beaten grand finalists

The Giants, in addition to Angove, gave unofficial debuts to draftees Phoenix Gothard, Ollie Hannaford and James Leake, who kicked a goal soon after coming on.
