Swan View man, 25, charged with gangland murder of Joe Versace at Gnangara

West Australian police have charged a 25-year-old man with murder over the death of Joe Versace in Gnangara last Thursday.

Joshua Colin Duperouzel has been charged with the shooting murder of Mr Versace in Gnangara, and appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon.

The 25-year-old was taken into custody on Monday, shortly after West Australian police launched an appeal for information on his whereabouts.

Mr Duperouzel's lawyer applied for a suppression order on his name, but the magistrate dismissed the application, saying his name had already been published.

In making the submission for a suppression order, Mr Duperouzel's lawyer told the court his client's family was potentially at risk due to an association "with the Rebels motorcycle club".

At this point, Mr Duperouzel himself spoke up, saying he'd never asked for that to be said, and claimed the club's "got nothing to do with" the case.

At another time during the hearing, relations of Mr Versace in the public gallery reacted when the magistrate referred to the victim as a "bikie associate".

The magistrate said that she herself wasn't calling him that, she was only referring to what had been said in the media.

Mr Duperouzel was not required to plead on Tuesday.

He is scheduled to appear in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on November 9.

Mr Versace was found dead at a workshop premises on Sydney Road after suffering gunshot wounds.

Neighbours reported hearing several gunshots and say they saw both a car and a motorcycle leaving the scene shortly afterwards.

The property where the shooting took place is a warehouse, which neighbours say is a shared workspace used by mechanics.

The killing triggered searches at homes around Perth, with Police Commissioner Col Blanch vowing to crack down on criminal gangs across the state.

"If people think that they can, in cold blood, shoot people in Western Australia, then the police will be coming for them," he said.
