Search for firebug behind blazes in leafy suburbs

Police want to speak to a young man seen near a car fire, after a series of suspected arsons. (HANDOUT/NSW POLICE)

A spate of suspicious fires in two well-heeled inner-city suburbs are being treated as random incidents with no clear motive as police look for a young man spotted in the area at the time.

In the space of 10 minutes, a white Mitsubishi SUV was engulfed in flames and a burnt chair was found by police a few streets away in Sydney's eastern suburbs in the early hours of Tuesday.

There have been no reports of injuries.

Police believe the incidents are connected to four bin fires in September in nearby Paddington.

Those blazes were already under investigation.

Detective Inspector Adam Solah on Friday said the fires appeared to be random and there was no clear ideological motivation behind the incidents.

Residents in nearby areas have been on high alert after a spate of anti-Semitic arson and vandalism attacks.

Investigators recently revealed they believed more than a dozen of the most serious of those incidents were orchestrated by organised criminals to further their own ends, rather than for ideological reasons.

As part of the arson probe, police released vision of a young man seen in the area at the time of Tuesday's car fire, in Edgecliff.

CCTV shows the man wearing ripped jeans and a black leather jacket walking nonchalantly through the local streets.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance with a medium build and neck-length black hair.
