Suspected mugger targeting women in their 80s charged

A suspected mugger who allegedly targeted women in their 80s has been charged before the courts.

The man allegedly targeted elderly women on the streets of Dublin 8 with a couple of incidents being reported to the gardai.

Two women in their 80s were "left very shaken" by the incidents in which one was knocked down and the other had their walking stick stolen which meant she was stranded on the street.

Both women's handbags were stolen which contained cash, house keys and jewellery.

The two incidents were contained in a garda report to Dublin City Council which was compiled by Assistant Commissioner Anne Marie Cagney.

The report read: "On the 28th March, 2022, at 4.40pm in the Dublin 8 area, an 82 year old lady was walking home from visiting the doctors when a lone male came from behind and pulled the injured party’s hood over her head and stole her walking stick leaving her unable to move.

"The [man] then stole the injured party’s handbag, wallet, house keys and cash. The injured party was left very shaken by the ordeal."

The report's detailing of the second incident read: "On the 29th March, 2022, at 1.05pm, again, in the Dublin 8 area, an 80 year old lady was walking home after doing her grocery shopping when a male approached her from behind. The snatched (sic) physically grabbed the injured party’s handbag using force and knocked her to the ground.

"The injured party’s handbag contained a small amount of cash, house keys, a white gold bracelet with diamonds and assorted groceries."

The gardai launched an investigation into the incidents and began canvassing the area for CCTV cameras that may have captured the suspect leaving or entering the area.

The report stated: "Gardaí identified the suspect from CCTV and were able to trace his movements to his home address with the property from the injured party in his possession.

"Gardaí obtained a search warrant from the District Court to search the suspect’s home address for evidence that may connect him to both these crimes. On the 4th April, 2022, Gardaí executed the search warrant during a planned and a co-ordinated search of his address, Gardaí arrested the suspect who was subsequently charged before the courts."
