Suspected gun recovered near Shaw's Bridge

A suspected gun has been recovered by police near Shaw's Bridge in Belfast.

It was found by a member of the public on Friday afternoon.

The PSNI have taken the weapon away for further examination.

The area had been sealed off buy police following the report from a member of the public.

A police spokesperson said: "Police received a report that a suspected firearm had been found by a member of the public in the vicinity of Shaw’s Bridge, South Belfast just after 2.30pm on Friday 6 January.

"Officers attended the scene and a cordon was set up for a time while the area was searched.

"The item, which is believed to have been in the water for some time, was removed for forensic examination."

A bag of bullets was also recovered from the water at the popular beauty spot in August of last year.
