Suspected drug driver ploughs into house as people flee

Residents fled their homes after a suspected drug driver ploughed his car into a house.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on Ormskirk Road in the Pemberton area of Wigan at around 11.30am yesterday, Monday, May 8. A police spokesperson said a gas pipe was left damaged after the crash.

No injuries were reported but some homes were evacuated "as a precaution". The driver, a man in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of Class A and B drugs.

The Manchester Evening News reported fire crews and gas workers attended the scene to make the area safe. A stretch of the road was cordoned off by police officers while clean up operations were completed.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 11:30am this morning (Monday 8 May) Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of a road traffic collision between a vehicle and a house on Ormskirk Road, Wigan. No injuries have been reported but there has been some structural damage caused to a gas pipe.

"Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and representatives from the gas board are at the scene to isolate the gas. A number of residents in the area have been temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

"A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of class A and B drugs. A scene remains in place with some disruption to the area with road closures in place along Ormskirk Road."
