Suspected burglar named after motorbike gang raid jewellery shop

Police have named a suspected burglar after a shop was raided in Southport.

Police were called to Rebecca's Jewellers, at around 9pm on Monday, March 21, after reports of a break-in. At the scene they found the shop, on Lord Street, had been damaged and jewellery had been stolen.

A cordon was set up by officers and a large part of Lord Street remained closed while investigations took place throughout Tuesday. March 22. Officers later confirmed that they arrested a man in connection with the burglary.

Steven Mallon has been charged in connection with the burglary. The 43-year-old from Mossley Hill has been charged with burglary and possession of a bladed article in public.

It has been reported that the gang that targeted the shop were on motorbikes. In a statement after the crime, Detective Chief Inspector Gayle Rooney said: “Thanks to a member of the public who called us as soon as this incident took place our officers were able to make a prompt arrest.

"Whilst we are establishing exactly what was stolen, I would ask if any individuals or businesses have been or are offered jewellery in Merseyside or surrounding areas in the coming days and have any suspicions as to their origin, please get in contact. This would be a distressing and inconvenient experience for any business and we will act on all information to find those responsible and bring them to justice."

A spokesperson for Merseyside police said: "A man has been charged following a report of a burglary in Southport on Monday (21 March). At around 9pm officers were called to a report of a burglary at Rebecca’s Jewellers on Lord Street.

"A group of males on motorbikes had forced entry into the premises and stole a large quantity of jewellery from the building. Steven Mallon, 43 years, of Briarwood Road, Liverpool was arrested and later charged with burglary and possession of a bladed article in public.

"He was remanded in custody to appear at Wirral Magistrates Court today (Wednesday 23 March)."
