Suspect Pleads Not Guilty In Montana Dad's Murder Case

A suspect in the murder of a Montana dad and outdoorsman pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday, claiming self-defense in the killing of 35-year-old Dustin Kjersem near Big Sky, Montana. Daren Christopher Abbey, 41, faces charges of deliberate homicide and tampering with evidence.

Abbey's confession to police alleged self-defense, stating that Kjersem threatened him after a dog incident at the campsite. However, the lack of defensive injuries on Abbey raised doubts about his claim. Kjersem's girlfriend found him dead in his tent, initially believed to be a bear attack until authorities determined it was a homicide.

Sheriff Dan Springer described the incident as a 'chance encounter,' where Kjersem welcomed Abbey to the campsite. Abbey confessed to hitting Kjersem with a piece of firewood, stabbing him with a screwdriver, and striking him with an axe. He later washed the weapons in a creek and took Kjersem's belongings, wiping them for fingerprints.

During the investigation, Abbey's behavior at local establishments raised concerns, with reports of past prison time and white supremacist comments. Kjersem's family mourns his loss, emphasizing his caring nature and the dedication of authorities in solving the case.

Abbey reserved a bond hearing for a later date during his arraignment hearing. The Gallatin County Attorney's Office confirmed they would not seek the death penalty in this case.
