Suspect named in attempted murder investigation after 'machete' attack

A second suspect has been named by police after a man was seriously hurt in a "machete" attack.

Police have charged a 31-year-old man, Thomas Byrne, after an 18-year-old was seriously hurt following a "machete" attack on Worcester Walk in Ellesmere Port. The incident happened at around 5pm and Thursday, July 14, and saw an air ambulance arrive in a nearby field.

Byrne, of HMP Leeds, was summoned to appear at Warrington Magistrates Court on January 24 to face the charge of section 18 assault. He will next appear at Chester Crown Court on February 21.

A second man, Joseph Farrell, 21, of Bridge Street, Birkenhead, has already pleaded guilty to section 18 assault, possession of a weapon in a public place, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, and handling stolen goods at an earlier hearing.

He was dealt with by way of a fine for the driving offences on his first appearance. He will next appear at Chester Crown on February 24 to be sentenced.
