Authorities are currently questioning a person of interest in connection with the tragic slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The individual in question, a 26-year-old software engineer named Luigi Mangione, has been identified as a strong person of interest in the case.
Mangione comes from a prominent Baltimore family with ties to the real estate and healthcare industries. He is the grandson of Nicholas Mangione, a well-known Baltimore real estate developer, and Mary C. Mangione, a philanthropist. The Mangione family owns Lorien Health Systems, a nursing home chain in Maryland, where Luigi volunteered in 2014.
Education-wise, Mangione is an Ivy League graduate, having attended the prestigious Gilman School in Baltimore, where he was the valedictorian of his class in 2016. He later pursued higher education at the University of Pennsylvania, earning both a master's and bachelor's degree in computer science with a minor in mathematics.
During his time at the University of Pennsylvania, Mangione was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Following his graduation, he worked as a software engineer for TrueCar, an online car sales company. His most recent known address was in Hawaii.
Despite his family's political ties, Mangione is registered as unaffiliated with any political party in Maryland. He is also the cousin of Maryland State Delegate Nino Mangione, a Republican lawmaker.
Authorities have been investigating Mangione in connection with the shooting of Brian Thompson, and private security guards have been stationed at the Mangione family's residence in Cockeysville, Maryland.
