The suspect involved in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning displayed a high level of preparation and clear intent, according to former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe. The suspect, who waited for Thompson to pass him before shooting him in the back and then firing additional rounds to ensure his death, demonstrated a significant level of training or determination, as noted by McCabe.
Police reported that the suspect fired two more rounds after the initial shot, indicating a deliberate effort to carry out the murder. McCabe highlighted the suspect's ability to clear a gun jam quickly as a skill typically acquired through extensive firearms training, such as in police academies, the FBI Academy, or the military.
The suspect's strategic timing during the incident was also noted, with the shooter arriving at the scene five minutes before Thompson and waiting casually for the right moment to act. This behavior suggests a possible understanding of when the CEO would leave the building, indicating a level of premeditation.
The ongoing search for the suspect has prompted police to urge anyone with information to come forward. The incident has raised concerns about the suspect's familiarity with firearms and the calculated nature of the attack, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution to the case.
