The New York Police Chief of Detectives, Joe Kenny, revealed on Tuesday that the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson may have suffered a back injury on July 4, 2023. Kenny mentioned that evidence related to the suspect, Luigi Mangione, indicated his struggles with sustaining the injury. Investigators are now exploring whether the insurance industry's handling of his claim or assistance played a role in the situation.
One of the key pieces of evidence is a handwritten document found with Mangione upon his arrest on Monday, along with his social media postings. The document suggests that Mangione was aware of UnitedHealthcare's investors' conference, where Thompson was shot and killed. It also mentions Mangione's intention to visit the conference site, as stated by the chief of detectives.
It was noted that Thompson typically had his own security detail with him while at home in Minnesota but opted not to have security while in New York. This decision may have left him vulnerable to the tragic incident.
Despite receiving 200 tips about the shooting, none of them identified Mangione as a suspect, according to Kenny. The investigation continues as authorities piece together the events leading to Thompson's death and the possible motives behind the crime.
