Authorities in Tempe, Arizona, have arrested a suspect in connection with three separate shootings that targeted a Democratic National Committee campaign office in a suburban area of Phoenix. The suspect, identified as Jeffrey Michael Kelly, 60, is also accused of hanging political signs lined with razor blades in a nearby affluent suburb of Ahwatukee.
The hand-painted signs, which were attached to palm trees, appeared to criticize Democrats and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee. Kelly faces three felony counts of acts of terrorism and four other related charges in connection with the incidents.
According to police reports, Kelly allegedly fired BB pellets and gunshots at the glass front door and a window of the Arizona Democrats' field office on three separate occasions in September and October. Fortunately, no one was present inside the office during the shootings.
Law enforcement officials discovered that Kelly had an extensive arsenal of weapons in his home, including over 200 guns and more than 250,000 rounds of ammunition. Maricopa County prosecutor Neha Bhatia expressed concerns that Kelly may have been planning a mass casualty event.
The arrest of the suspect brings some relief to the community and underscores the importance of vigilance in addressing politically motivated violence. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the motives behind the attacks and any potential accomplices.
