Suspect, 29, charged over attack outside Sainsbury’s that left man, 43, fighting for life

A suspect has been charged with grievous bodily harm after a man suffered serious head injuries in an attack outside a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Demiesh Williams, 29, is accused of assaulting 43-year-old Andrew Clarke outside the branch in Upper Elmers End Road, Beckenham, at around 8.25pm on Sunday.

Williams, of Fir Tree Gardens, Croydon, is due to appear before Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

It is alleged he “unlawfully and maliciously” caused GBH to Mr Clarke with intent, contrary to section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act.

Video and images from the south east London scene showed a large emergency services response close to Eden Park rail station, Bromley.

London Ambulance Service treated the victim for head injuries before taking him to a nearby hospital’s major trauma centre.

The Metropolitan Police said he remains in a life-threatening condition.

Detectives are not seeking anyone else in connection to the incident and enquiries continue.

In a statement, MP for Beckenham and Penge Liam Conlon said: “Police have said this appears to be a random attack following an altercation, and no weapon was involved.”

He praised police for “their swift response in identifying and apprehending the suspect”, adding: “I would like to offer my condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones at this difficult time, and have offered my support to them and the police.”

The supermarket remained cordoned off on Monday afternoon.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “The store is temporarily closed as we continue to support the police with their investigation.”

London Ambulance Service added: “We were called at 20.21pm on Sunday, March 16 to reports of an assault on Upper Elmers End Road, Beckenham.

“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.

“We treated a man at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre by road.”
