Susanna Reid sends GMB co-star Kate Garraway message after Elton John's Derek tribute

Susanna Reid shared a sweet message for Kate Garraway and Derek Draper on today's edition of Good Morning Britain.

The broadcaster, 52, was hosting the ITV show alongside former politician Ed Balls when the pair discussed Sir Elton John's moving tribute to Kate and Derek during his latest performance.

Good Morning Britain's entertainment correspondent Richard Arnold joined Susanna and Ed this morning to reveal Kate and her husband Derek got a special mention from Sir Elton at The O2 Arena on Monday night.

"Our very own Kate Garraway and Derek were serenaded last night by none other than Sir Elton John himself," Richard explained to ITV viewers.

"He spied them in the audience at The O2 and dedicated the track Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me to them, telling the rest of the arena how he thrilled he was, calling them an inspiring couple."

Derek fell victim to Covid-19 in early 2020, and was left critically ill and hospitalised for more than a year.

The former lobbyist returned home from hospital in April 2021 but still requires care and assistance and is regularly readmitted to hospital, as he struggles to return to full health following first contracting the viral disease.

As Richard revealed Sir Elton's tribute to Kate and Derek on this morning's installment of Good Morning Britain, Kate's colleague Susanna added a sweet sentiment of her own.

"That is so emotional, what a superstar," Susanna gushed, adding: "As are you Kate and Derek."

Kate has documented her husband's battle over the last few years - even winning awards for one of her documentaries - and admits she does so to help others who don't have a platform.

Speaking previously on Good Morning Britain, Kate revealed how Sir Elton was one of the first big names to reach out to her when Derek fell seriously ill in 2020.

She recalled: "Elton John contacted me. It was so strange. I was like, ‘Elton… John?’ We do have a mutual friend, which I didn’t know about.

"And because of all the work he does with the Aids Foundation he was like, ‘What can I do to help? I know a bit about antiviral stuff. And I’m on board. I’ll try to help. He’s incredible."

Sir Elton described Kate and Derek as 'an inspiring couple' at his gig last night (ITV)

Richard explained on Good Morning Britain today how Kate played her husband Sir Elton's tracks while he was recovering in hospital.

He added: "It's lovely to see them out and about because of course as we know it's quite the feat so it's wonderful that they got to share that moment together."

During his gig in London last night, Sir Elton told fans the "inspiring" couple had suffered "really tough times".

"They’re inspiring. They’ve never given up and I’m so thrilled they’re here, I can’t believe they are here," the legendary singer told the crowd.

"I want to dedicate this song to the people I mentioned before, but especially to you guys," he added, before belting out a rendition of Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.
