Piers Morgan has spoken out in support of his former Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid, praising her for a 'lethally effective' line of questioning during her heated interview with Boris Johnson.
Prior to sitting down next to Susanna in the study at 10 Downing Street on Tuesday morning as cameras were rolling, the Prime Minister had boycotted the ITV breakfast show for close to five years, despite the fact that a number of his past and current colleagues were regular guests during the height of the Covid pandemic. And, having waited nearly half a decade to get him back in the hot seat, Susanna was in no mood to give him an easy ride.
Pulling no punches from the off, Susanna fired a damning first question at Johnson, asking him if he was honest, as she kept pushing him for a straight answer. The PM's GMB interview, having started nearly half an hour late, lasted around 20 minutes with topics covered by Susanna including the on-going conflict in Ukraine and the escalating cost of living crisis back on home turf. And it was when discussing the latter that things got particularly fraught as Susanna used GMB viewers' plights as case studies.

Focusing on a heart-breaking message that had come in from 77-year-old widow Elsie who receives a pension of 170 a week and whose energy bills have soared from £17 to £85 a month, totalling an additional £816 a year. Susanna told Johnson : "To cut down on spending, Elsie has resorted to now eating one meal a day. She's 77 years-old, she's losing weight. She goes to the supermarket at the end of the day to get discounted yellow sticker items; she gets up early in the morning to use her Freedom bus pass to stay on buses all day to avoid using energy at home."
Susanna asked the PM: "What else should she cut back on?" He replied that he doesn't want her 'to cut back on anything,' as Susanna then told him that Elsie didn't qualify for the council tax rebate, adding: "You can't say anything to help Elsie can you?"
Piers, who quit GMB last year after storming out of the studio, was among the millions who watched Susanna's interview with Boris Johnson at home and was quick to praise his former colleague. Taking to Twitter, he posted: "Boris will be heading back to the fridge after that. Well done @susannareid100 - the Elsie line of attack was lethally effective in exposing his Government’s failure to properly help our most vulnerable people amid soaring inflation."
