Susanna Reid pays moving tribute to 'legendary' Shane Warne after tragic death

Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid paid tribute to regular guest and sports legend Shane Warne on the ITV show on Monday.

Susanna shared her sorrow over the news of his passing, as she reached out to his loved ones.

Shane died on Friday at the age of just 52 after suffering a suspected heart attack, in Thailand.

An autopsy on cricket legend Shane has confirmed the Australian star died from natural causes.

Warne's family have been informed and accept the finding, with his body now due to be transferred to Australian consular officials for a return to Australia, where he will be given a state funeral.

GMB host Susanna took a moment during the first show since his death to pay tribute to the late sportsman, as she recalled his regular appearances on the show.

Revealing he was a good friend of former co-host Piers Morgan, Susanna shared her condolences with Shane's family as she talked of the "enormous shock" over his death.

Susanna said on the ITV show: "I just want to pay tribute to Shane Warne this morning, he’s been a guest on this programme a number of times.

"Obviously, an absolutely legendary cricketer, the spin king. An enormous character and relentless drive to win whatever he was doing."

Susanna's coo-host Richard Madeley then asked: "And you’ve interviewed him on the show, have you?"

She told him: "Yes, and he was a great friend of Piers and I know that it is an enormous shock to everybody. But just sending love to his family and his friends this morning."

The host went on: "He’s going to be honoured with a state funeral. Australia offered the state funeral and that offer has been accepted by the family."

Richard then paid his own tribute on the show, commenting: "I was talking to a sporting hero in this country over the weekend about him and he said that possibly the best night of his life, certainly the most memorable was a night out on the town with Shane Warne.

"It still illuminated in bright lights in his memory."

Susanna responded: "He knew how to live his life to the absolute full, and died tragically young, of course, on Friday at the age of just 52.

"I’m so sorry to everyone who is devastated by that."

In a statement confirming the death on Friday, Shane's management said: "It is with great sadness we advise that Shane Keith Warne passed away of a suspected heart attack in Koh Samui, Thailand today, Friday 4 March.

"Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived. The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course."

He is survived by his three children Brooke, Summer and Jackson.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
