Survivor set for UK comeback as BBC confirm reboot of reality series in 2023

A reboot of the reality TV show Survivor will be broadcast on the BBC next year, it has been revealed. A brand new UK adaption of the popular competition show will air across 16 episodes on BBC One in 2023.

The series last appeared on our screens back in the early noughties where it aired on ITV across two seasons. But now, 20 new players from across the UK will take on the challenge of being stranded in a tropical location, where they'll be divided into two tribes in the "ultimate physical and psychological gameshow".

The BBC has promised "a compelling test of brains, brawn and betrayal" as the contestants will compete to “outwit, out play and outlast their rivals”. After a number of players are eliminated, the tribes will merge and continue to battle it out, as only one can be crowned the 'Ultimate Survivor' and take home the cash prize.

“Survivor is a global television hit," Kate Phillips, director of unscripted at the BBC, said on the announcement: "And to be able to bring one of TV’s most successful formats to audiences in the UK in a uniquely BBC way is a very exciting prospect indeed.”

The news comes just a few weeks after the BBC announced they would also be bringing the hit 1990s television show Gladiators back to our television screens next year. The entertainment game show will return with 11 episodes in 2023, with filming taking place at the Utilita Arena Sheffield.

The broadcaster's latest TV show revival follows the format celebrating 25 years this year after first airing in Sweden in 1997. The BBC has said Survivor "is one of the most watched reality entertainment formats around the world" with 50 versions of the programme having been commissioned around the globe.

The new UK adaption has been commissioned by BBC One and BBC iPlayer from Banijay UK company Remarkable Entertainment and will be led by producers Natalka Znak and Claire O’Donohoe. Natalka Znak, chief executive officer of Remarkable Entertainment, said: “Survivor is ‘the greatest gameshow on earth’ for a reason – it has everything – reality, adventure, drama, and the ultimate game.

“I can’t wait to be boots on the ground, working with Paul Osborne, Stephen Lovelock and the fantastic team at Remarkable to make this epic series for the BBC.”

More details about when the show will be broadcast including presenters and cast of the UK version of Survivor will be announced in due course, the BBC has said. However it has been confirmed it will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2023.
